Our Story
Some friendships are measured in years. Ours is measured in decades, in this city, in the rhythm of Manhattan mornings and the quiet of its evenings.
The beginning. Joan was raised in the shadow of the Garment District, where her mother sewed for other people and taught her daughter that good clothing is honest clothing: well cut, well made, and kind to the woman inside it. Eleanor arrived in New York in her twenties, found work in a small bookshop on the Upper West Side, and fell in love with the way a good story can make a person feel understood. We met as neighbors in the same brownstone, two young women far from where we started, and we became the family we each chose.
The years in between. Life did what life does. There were careers and children, walk-ups and moves across town, seasons of plenty and seasons of loss. Through all of it we kept meeting for coffee, and through all of it we kept saying the same thing: one day, we should open our own little shop. We knew exactly what it would feel like. We were simply never quite ready.
The decision. When the busiest years finally softened, we looked at each other and realized the time we had been waiting for was now. We were not young, and we decided that was precisely the point. Between us we had a lifetime of knowing what women actually want to wear: pieces that feel like second nature, that flatter without shouting, that last. So we began.
Today. Joan & Eleanor New York is that little shop, grown up. Joan still chooses the fabrics and the fits, one piece at a time, the way her mother taught her. Eleanor still writes the words and looks after the women who write to us, the way a good bookseller looks after a reader. Our pieces now travel far beyond Manhattan, to women we will never meet, and it still moves us every single time.
A simple timeline:
- The 1970s: Two young women meet as neighbors in a Manhattan brownstone and become lifelong friends.
- The decades that follow: Careers, families, and a shared daydream of a boutique of their own, returned to over countless cups of coffee.
- Today: Joan & Eleanor New York opens its doors online, so that women everywhere can share in what began on a West Side stoop.
Everything we make and choose still answers to the city that shaped us: elegant, unhurried, and quietly sure of itself. That is the New York we love, and the one we hope you feel in every piece.
With love, Joan & Eleanor
